Read how to keep your certification current by completing your CEC requirements. core muscle anatomy
Taught by Sally Donaubauer, an experienced physical therapist from Harkness Dance Center for Injuries as well as a Kane school grad, this course explores musculoskeletal anatomy and basic kinesiology principles—emphasizing the trunk, hip, shoulder girdle, arm, and neck—as they relate to the teaching and practice of Pilates, yoga, and bodywork. Class is presented in a lecture-style format with course workbooks and power point presentations. In addition, the instructor palpates muscles, bones, and ligaments on a live model. As the model moves his/her body on equipment or on the mat, students gain an opportunity to appreciate the anatomical model in a 3-dimensional form, examining the way muscles shorten, lengthen, and stabilize joints. Issues such as core stability, common tension patterns, the body as a weight-bearing structure counteracting gravity, correct alignment, and injury recovery are addressed and investigated. Students also palpate the superficial skeletal features and muscles of the core for a deeper, hands-on understanding. Students can test out of this course with a passing grade on the Kane School anatomy entrance exam. comprehensive mat certification
The Kane School Comprehensive Pilates Mat Training is a 65-hour advanced Pilates mat certification program that is singular in its attention to assessment, biomechanics and application of musculoskeletal anatomy to the human form. The primary objective of Kane School Comprehensive Mat Certifications is to empower instructors by providing them with the skills to facilitate their clients’ achievement of specific strength and flexibility goals, while maximizing dynamic alignment and movement potential. The Mechanics of Respiration, working in Neutral Pelvis and Posterior Pelvic Tilt, Core and Scapular Stability, Cervical Nod and Curl, and the Core Principles are covered in detail on the first weekend of the course. The second weekend of the Comprehensive Pilates Mat Training explores classical Pilates mat repertory, detailing the application of the Core Principles to each exercise. entrance requirements: •Either a passing grade on the anatomy entrance exam or completion of the Core Muscle Anatomy Course. requirements for completion: •10 hrs of Supervised Teaching •10 hrs of Self Practice •10 hrs of Group Mat Classes (offered at Kinected; not included in tuition) •5 hrs Assistant Teaching Mat Classes taught at Kinected •3 hrs of teaching Community Classes • Passing grade on written exam, administered on last day of course equipment training: basic training phase I & II
phase I choreography and cueing: It is primary to the Kane School philosophy of teacher training that in this first tier of learning, students stay true to the classic choreography and repertory. Kane School certifications teach the traditional basic, intermediate, and advanced exercise series on the Reformer, Cadillac, High Barrell and Wunda Chair, paying specific attention to verbal cueing for choreography and dynamics in movement. Students will work on session tempo and intensity, while learning how to integrate the Kane School Core Principles into a fitness style session. phase II touch: The Kane School is a pioneer in touch instruction for Pilates teachers. In this course, students will explore their manual perception skills through exercises and practical techniques. Over time, students will develop their own manual sonar, which will help detect fascial laxity and tension and asses healthy and not-so-healthy biomechanics. In this aspect of the course, students will also discuss and explore how to be truly present with themselves and their clients, while learning how to construct healthy boundaries to avoid “burning out.” The Twenty Touches will be presented as ways to manually guide people out of common habitual patterns like elevated shoulders, cervical hyperextension, and overactive quadriceps. biomechanics: Pilates is a great movement venue to maintain joint health. It is also a great venue to study basic joint biomechanics because much of the movement is uniplanar or biplanar, and the load can be adjusted easily from light to heavy. In this portion of the course, students will look at joint biomechanics from head to toe. Students will assess normal ranges of motion in each joint and develop visual skills to discern between normal and abnormal. Students will then present and discuss ways to facilitate flexibility where range of motion is lacking and strengthening where mobility is excessive. special populations and modifications: This portion of the course is designed to educate instructors on basic diagnoses and their contraindications, teaching students how to think about working with populations that require special consideration. Though not a rehab course, this workshop will give Kane School graduates the tools to make educated choices about special populations, teaching instructors how to create safe and enjoyable movement experiences for their clients. advanced teaching techniques: The final aspect of the course, this one-day workshop focuses on how to assess a new client, set goals, and structure custom-made workouts. Intake procedures will be presented, and students will practice ways to dialogue with clients in order to set appropriate goals. From a physiological perspective, students will learn different components of an effective workout in order to target specific strength, flexibility, and overall fitness goals, while creating safe and engaging movement experiences that will challenge clients to progress and transform. entrance requirements: •Completion of Comprehensive Mat requirements for completion: •Student Teaching: 80 Hours •Observation: 65 hours •Self Practice: 85 hours •Assistant Teaching: 30 hours OR 2 full workshops •Apprentice Teaching: 45 hours •Completion of Students Card: 10 Apprentice Sessions & 10 Expert Sessions at Kinected equipment training: independent study requirements
In addition to attending the lecture hours, all teachers-in-trainings are required to fulfill the following hours of Student Teaching, Observation, Self Practice, Assistant and Apprentice teaching. Teachers learn most about teaching by teaching, observing experienced teachers, and feeling the work in their own bodies. student teaching: 80 hours The Kane School and Kinected are committed to creating an environment for exploration and learning. Student Teaching is comprised of a combination of "supervised" and "unsupervised" teaching. During supervised teaching hours, students teach one-on-one sessions to volunteer clients while under the supervision of Kane School expert trainers. Supervisors critique and guide students to help them integrate the material and develop their skills as teachers. The studio devotes 12 hours per week for supervised teaching. During unsupervised teaching hours, students work one-on-one with other students and Pilates instructors without supervision. observation: 65 hours Observing experienced teachers affords trainees a great deal of information about not only what exercises to do, but also how to deal with different personality types, movement backgrounds and skill levels. This is an invaluable aspect of the process of becoming a teacher. Students can observe any Kinected teachers to fulfill their observation hours. self practice: 85 hours It is of primary importance to feel and experience the effects of doing Pilates. When you understand the work in your own body, it is much easier to facilitate someone else’s understanding. Self Practice includes Pilates 1-on-1s and group classes. Students may also use the equipment in the studio during supervised teaching hours to practice on their own. Students are required to take 10 sessions with a Kinected expert teacher and 10 sessions with a Kinected apprentice teacher as part of their self practice hours. assistant teaching: 30 hours OR 2 full workshops Once students have attended all of the lecture hours, they are required to assist in any aspect of the teacher training before they test out. They can assist with any of the workshops previously attended: Kane Core Integration Mat, Choreography (Beginner, Intermediate or Advanced), Touch, Biomechanics, Special Populations, Advanced Teaching Techniques. apprentice teaching: 45 hours After completing the workshops as well as the supervised teaching, observation, and assistant teaching requirements, teachers are ready to work with clients as apprentice teachers. As a new teacher, it is best to start working with the general public in an environment that is familiar, safe and supportive. In this aspect of the training, teachers can still resource the school and its faculty. The Kane School reserves the right to request additional observation, supervised teaching and self-practice hours toward certification. equipment training: practical and written exams
The final portion of the Equipment Training certification is the test-out. This happens in two parts: 1) the written exam, which tests the student’s range of knowledge and problem solving skills, and 2) the practical exam, in which students demonstrate the teaching techniques they have cultivated over the course of their study at the Kane School. cec requirements
In order to maintain a Kane School certification in good standing, all graduates are required to fulfill yearly Continuing Education Credits (CECs) as follows:
