program overview

The  kinectED Mentor Program is a six-month immersive mentorship for Pilates professionals designed to help certified instructors blossom into gifted and dedicated teachers. During the program, participants gain advanced-level education in Pilates, honing skills in the areas of choreography, programming, and teaching. Participants cultivate a particular area of expertise by selecting an intensive course of study in one of the three following concentrations:
  • Anatomy
  • Injuries & Rehabilitation
  • The Art of Teaching
Throughout the program, participants complete approximately 200 hours of requirements (described in detail below) and work one-on-one with a mentor (either Kinected studio director Matt McCulloch or Kane School founder Kelly Kane) to cultivate their course of study and achieve the program's goals.

The mentorship culminates in a final written project and presentation. Example topics within concentrations for final projects include:
  • Anatomy: Comparing the architecture of the shoulder and hip joints, The foot as a the foundation of locomotion
  • Injury & Rehabilitation: The role of Pilates in degenerative knee conditions, Pilates for osteoporosis
  • The Art of Teaching: How to teach Pilates to children, Using Pilates to teach proprioception in the geriatric population
program goals

The goals of the mentor program are to:
  • Impart advanced-level skills and comfort in teaching Pilates, equipping mentees with tools to work safely & effectively with a wide range of clientele
  • Cultivate a mentee’s own movement practice and expand mentee’s choreography and programming repertoire
  • Deepen a mentee’s knowledge of anatomy and prevalent injuries & conditions affecting clientele
  • Foster skills in the art of learning, teaching mentees how to apply these skills to a lifelong course of study
  • Enhance a mentee’s communication and business skills through writing endeavors and public presentation
prerequisites
  • Basic level mat and full equipment (reformer, cadillac, chair, barrels) certification in Pilates
  • Anatomy proficiency
curriculum & requirements

The program consists of 200 education hours (not including self-study and research), divided among three core elements: mentorship, skill enrichment, and focused study.

Mentorship
As part of the program, mentees choose a principal mentor (either Matt McCulloch or Kelly Kane). The mentor guides the student through the program, cultivating the mentee’s chosen area of concentration and ensuring achievement of program goals. Requests for a specific mentor will be honored to the greatest extent possible. Mentees meet with their mentor as follows:

Program Requirement
Description Course Hours
Mentor meetings
Three one-hour meetings per month (18 total) with mentor to guide and cultivate mentee’s chosen field of study
3 hrs/mth = 18 hours
Mentor-supervised sessions*
Under the supervision of his/her mentor, mentee teaches one-hour private Pilates sessions to a specified client at Kinected approximately three times per month (18 sessions total); these sessions offer mentees a 1-on-1 environment with his/her mentor to enrich teaching, programming, and career development skills. 3 hrs/mth = 18 hours
  TOTAL HOURS
36
*Mentee receives $20/hr credit for each completed mentor-supervised session (which can be used as Kinected cash redeemable for any studio service) = $360 total possible credit.

Skill Enrichment

The second element of the mentorship focuses on skill enrichment, expanding both the mentee’s Pilates skills and continuing education studies. As part of the program, the mentee partakes in the following:

Program Requirement
Description Course Hours
Pilates sessions and classes During program, mentee partakes in:

  • Private sessions: At least 10 one-hour private sessions with Matt and at least 10 one-hour private sessions with Kelly.
  • Mat/equipment classes: 2 per week, which may be attended at  Kinected or outside studios.
11-13 hrs/mth =
70 hours
(divided into):
  • 3-4 hours/mth = 20 course hours
  • 8-9 hours/mth = 50 course hours
Educational workshops During program, mentee partakes in:

  • Continuing Education Workshops: Mentees attend four Kinected continuing ed workshops of their choosing within the 6 month mentorship time frame. To integrate information learned from these workshops, mentees write a synopsis (less than one page) of the teachings gleaned from the workshop, which will be discussed with your mentor at one of the tri-monthly meetings.
  • FAMI Workshop: Mentees gain an immersive experience in anatomy and injuries by attending the Functional Anatomy for Movement & Injuries (FAMI) Workshop held at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. An internationally-renowned course designed exclusively for fitness professionals, the 4-day course brings the best of the medical education to the movement world, including  lectures on injuries and Gross Laboratory sessions. The course is held annually in the summer; for more details visit famiworkshop.com.
48 hours (divided into):
  • 4 workshops, which usually run 4-6 hours each = 24 hours

  • 24 hours
  TOTAL HOURS 118

Focused Study
The third element of the mentorship is Focused Study, during which mentees fulfill the following educational responsibilities to facilitate studying and learning within their chosen concentration:

Program Requirement Description Course Hours
Research During the length of the program, mentees collect and review literature and research (i.e., scientific studies, anatomy texts) relevant to the mentee’s chosen concentration. The mentor guides the mentee in choosing an appropriate direction and resources. N/A
Teacher’s Lab During the program, mentees lead one Teacher’s Lab per month (six total) at Kinected. The Teacher’s Lab is a one-hour continuing education class open to instructors only; it is an opportunity for the mentee to develop public speaking and teaching skills, while furthering his/her area of study. For each lab, the mentee chooses a topic that is relevant to his/her specific concentration. For instance, if a mentee’s concentration is Anatomy: The Shoulder Joint, the mentee might hold three labs on the anatomy of the shoulder, two labs on injuries & conditions affecting the shoulder, and one lab on related Pilates programming for the shoulder 1 hr/mth =
6 hours

Educational blogs During the program, the mentee participates in various blogs to cultivate writing skills (which are crucial for success in both the teaching and business worlds) and further his/her course of study. Specifically, the mentee contributes to:
  • Kinected blogs: The mentee writes three blogs (one per month) on topics related to his/her area of concentration, intended for teachers and/or clients as the audience, to be hosted on the Kinected website (www.kinectedcenter.com). These blogs may be on the same topic taught at the monthly Teacher’s Lab or related to the FAMI Workshop.
  • Living anatome blogs: The mentee writes three blogs (1 per month) providing tips on how to stay healthy on the wards for healthcare professionals, on the living anatome website (www.livinganatome.com).
1 hr/mth =
6 hours
(divided into):
  • 1 blog/mth, approx 1 hr/mth =
    3 hours

  • 1 blog/mth, approx 1 hr/mth =
    3 hours
Culminating project As a natural sequel to the aforementioned assignments, the mentee completes a final project (much like a dissertation in a PhD program) on a specific topic/question relevant to his/her concentration. The final project contains a:
  • Written component: A five to 10-page paper that reviews the research a mentee has collected on his/her area of concentration (e.g. The benefit of Pilates in pregnancy), and also integrates his/her thoughts on the topic.
  • Practical component: During the final Teacher’s Lab, the mentee formally presents his/her final project (30 min), summarizing the research collected and his/her final conclusions. The mentee then leads a sample class (45 min) that explores the his/her topic and incorporates his/her findings.
5-6 hrs/mth = 34 hours
  TOTAL HOURS 46

In addition to the requirements described above, mentees meet with the Kinected’s Education Manager three times during the program, to ensure consistency and coherence in the overall experience, as well as to field any questions.
