FAMI Q&A with Elliot Fishbein, PT, OCS, CFMT, FAAOMPT

Elliot headshotKinected chatted up resident PT & FAMI faculty member Elliot Fishbein about his perspective on presenting at FAMI & the unique experience FAMI provides workshop participants. Here’s what he had to say:

You have presented the biomechanics and rehab lectures at FAMI for the past 2 years; what do you enjoy most about teaching FAMI?

Teaching the breakout biomechanics labs where I get a chance to talk about the function of all the anatomy the participants are learning, and transfer knowledge into practical application.

In terms of curriculum at FAMI, what do you find is the most valuable to FAMI attendees?

The anatomy labs where you can view the previously dissected prosections combined with the clinical lectures from the anatomy professors.  The combination of 3-d visualization of actual structures and clinical information is very effective.

Many different disciplines/instructors attend FAMI each year – Pilates, yoga, GYROTONIC®, personal trainers, manual therapists – just to name a few. Do you find that creates a positive learning environment at FAMI? How does this variety of instructors/ backgrounds affect the FAMI experience?

It definitely creates a positive learning environment.  I think people of varying disciplines come in with distinct perspectives on the material and different ideas on how they’re hoping to use it.  It’s great because some practitioners will ask questions that others wouldn’t have thought to ask which expands everyone’s perspective on the information.

As a member of the FAMI staff, what do you find is one of the most consistent characteristics of the FAMI attendee?

Eagerness to learn.

What advice would you give to this year’s Winter FAMI participant, as far as preparation for the course?

Think about what you want to get out of FAMI and what your goals are for attending.  That way you can come in with the right focus and take advantage of the opportunity to ask deliberate questions to all of the expert presenters.
