02 Apr benefit class
Please read this statement from Kuan Hui Chew (benefit class details below): “As many are aware, hate crimes against Asians in America have risen sharply since the pandemic began. According to NYPD data, hate crime motivated by anti Asian sentiment in New York jumped by 1,900% in the last 12 months. There are over 3,800 cases being reported nation wide in the past year, averaging 10.4 cases a day, and sadly, there is 0 conviction till this day.
There is a Chinese saying ‘大事化小,小事化无‘, reduce a substantial matter into a small one, and a small matter into nothing. That is what we have been taught all our lives: don’t ruffle feathers and keep quiet. Unfortunately, it is getting impossible stay quiet when our friends and family are being brutally attacked and murdered.
We cannot stay quiet when there are cases like an 89 year-old Chinese woman (name not disclosed) being slapped across the face and set on fire in Brooklyn. Or Noel Quintana, 61 year old Filipino man being slashed across the face on the L train. When he yelled for help, none of the passengers came to his aid; he ended up receiving 100 stitches on his face. Or consider the 84 year old Thai grandfather Vichar Ratanapakdee who was shoved and killed in San Francisco. Most recently, we protest the mass killing of 8 people in Atlanta, including 2 of Chinese descent: Xiaojie Tan, Daoyou Feng, and 4 of Korean descent: Soon Chung Park, Hyun Jung Grant, Suncha Kim, Yong Ae Yue, along with Delaina Ashley Yaun and Paul Andre Michels.
All of these incidences have greatly altered our lives. Many Asians have stopped using public transportation, and if we do have to go out, we hide our skin + hair, wear the biggest mask possible, and try not make eye contact. Even with all that, it does not guarantee us safety.
I urge everyone who is in the position to speak up against hate crimes, ANY hate crime + inequality, to please speak up. One of the ways to make our voices heard is to help organizations that are fighting against hate + inequality. Please support this event + unite against white supremacy and hate crimes. All of the proceeds of this benefit class will go to two organizations:
• STOP AAPI HATE: This ‘center tracks and responds to incidents of hate, violence, harassment, discrimination, shunning, and child bullying against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the United States.’
• The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU): ‘A nonprofit organization founded in 1920 to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to every person in this country by the Constitution and laws of the United States’ ”
